6 Fun Ways to Change Your Home After a Divorce

Are you looking to change your home after divorce?

Divorce can be a very stressful — and incredibly lengthy — process. Once the dust has settled and you are finally finished with all of the legalities and have officially signed the final paperwork, you might feel stuck in a home that serves as a constant reminder of the expired relationship. If you are struggling with finding ways to make your post-divorce house a home again, here are six fun ways to spruce things up so you can start your new chapter.

Tips on How to Change Your Home After Divorce

Give It a Deep Clean

Nothing is more symbolic than giving your home a deep clean once your divorce is finalized. Begin by removing anything that belonged to your spouse, but do not throw it away unless you have been told that you can do so. There is no sense in creating any unnecessary drama at this point since you’ve already come so far. Once that is finished, move onto the rest of the home, including your personal items and your closet. If there is anything that may keep you from moving on, whether it is an outfit that you wore on a special date or a trinket that reminds you of the past, clean it out. Do what you can to make your home a place where you can start fresh and isn’t full of good or bad memories that may hold you back from your new beginning.

Make It Totally Yours

Now is the time to do everything that you wanted to do to your home when you were married. If you wanted an outdoor living area with a beautiful pool, don’t hold back and begin to look into pool financing. Paint each room the color you want, and add some personal touches that are your style without having to worry about pleasing anyone else. Without a partner in your home to weigh in on your decorating plans, you will begin to feel totally free and at ease with your newly created life. If something makes you smile or brings you joy when you are out shopping, bring that item home with you and display it proudly. Your home is your sanctuary and should be exactly how you want it to be.

Bring Laughter In

When you feel ready (and this could take some time), invite people over who truly make you happy. This is not the time to invite mutual friends of yours and your husband’s over, however. Make this time all about you and the people who are able to support you the most without any awkwardness or bias. Some friendships do sadly end after divorce for a many reasons. Choosing sides, not feeling comfortable with grief, and many other things could be reasons why once good friends stray after a divorce. Choose those who you associate with wisely, and lean on them when you need to.

Create a Soothing Mood

Your home should be a place where you can truly relax and be yourself. Create a soothing, happy mood in your house by listening to your favorite music or by simply taking time to enjoy the silence once in a while. If you like to relax in the bathtub, create a zen space with candles, essential oils, and bath bombs that you can plop into the tub any time the mood to take a bath strikes. You have earned the right to wind down whenever you want to, and after what you have been through, it is good for the body and the soul to indulge a bit.

Plant Something New in Your Yard (or Inside)

Plant something new in your yard to symbolize new beginnings. Enjoy watching it grow and thrive as you do the same. This can serve as a daily reminder of how much progress you have made and will continue to make. If you do not have outdoor space of your own, purchase a house plant or even a small succulent that you can nurture physically as you also nurture yourself symbolically.

Change Up the Bedroom

Even if you do something as simple as buying all new bedding, it is important to create a new look and feel in your bedroom and not allow old items to keep you stuck in the past. Odds are, some deep sleep could do you good right now, so get yourself the most comfortable, coziest bedding you can find. Buy all the throw pillows and bedding accents that you want, and purchase that floral or bright comforter or duvet you have been eyeing for years. The bedroom is finally all your own, so make it a place where you can truly unwind and get a good night’s sleep.

Divorce can be utterly draining. That’s why it can help to change your home. If you are alone in the house that you once shared with a spouse, use some of these tips to make it your own and start your new (and improved) life.
