Making the Most of ‘Me Time’ After Your Divorce

On the scale of stressful life events, divorce comes in second, after the death of a spouse or other close family member. It undoubtedly imposes many challenges—getting your finances in order, possibly moving home, and sometimes, having to make new friends.

Hopefully, your divorce will have one thing you may not have had much time for lately; something that can benefit your health unexpectedly. It’s called ‘me time, and it is a luxury that is worth actively pursuing at least once a day.

Me Time Improves Your Psychological Wellbeing

It can be hard to negotiate all the terms of your divorce, undertake all the mental and physical work you need to tie up all loose ends and keep your bearings at work. Investing in quality time for yourself can be the boost you need to get all this work done. A 2015 study by researchers at the British Psychological Society found that high-quality me-time enhances psychological well-being and improves employee engagement and interpersonal relationships.

Interestingly, me time doesn’t have to be solitary; you can invite your best friend or a beloved family member to join you in your chosen activity. The only thing it has to be is personally fulfilling. Whether you head to a spa or take a walk in nature, when your chosen activity is over, you should feel like you have recharged your batteries and obtained greater grounding, peace, and well-being.

Ideas for Me Time Activities

If you seek a little inspiration for solitary activities that will re-energize, pamper, or make you feel refreshed, one of the best places to head for is your memory bank. Try to think of your ‘happy’ place as a child and head to this place or to one that inspires a similar sensation. For instance, if you loved going to music concerts in the city and it’s been a while since you did, check out what’s on and go.

Do so even if you only buy a ticket for one. If you love the effect art has on your mind and soul, visit the gallery where the most inspirational pieces you can think of are located. If you’ve been neglecting your physical fitness, try to embrace a relatively light or moderate outdoorsy activity. Being in a nature-filled area for just 10 minutes significantly lowers your stress levels, so choose nature over the gym when things are tense. Kayaking, swimming, or going for a calming walk in the forest will center and ground you, helping you to put problems into perspective when you get back.

Embracing Novelty

When you have ticked every time on your list of favorite activities, try a few new ones. Studies have shown that trying out new things or engaging in experiences that push your limits or teach you new things can provide you with a sense of personal growth.

Try to think of an activity that sounds a bit risky (such as scuba diving), or one that can teach you a skill like cooking international dishes or even molecular cuisine. Instead of going to the same restaurant, head to a Michelin-starred one and try out the Chef’s tasting menu. It’s all about expanding your viewpoint, giving yourself the chance to meet new people you may not have come across before, and discovering hidden passions.

Divorce can be stressful. It can be challenging to find you have more time alone when you once participated in most activities with your partner. Research indicates, however, that me time benefits your health in many ways. To make the most of these benefits, do something you love, but also try doing completely new things that can make life new and exciting.
