Tips for Self Care After a Divorce: The Importance of Healing

A divorce is not easy, especially when you tend to put the blame on yourself. Learn how to heal slowly but surely with self care and time.

Tips for Self Care After a Divorce: The Importance of Healing

If you have just been through a divorce, whether it was initiated by you or not, you need to give yourself time to mourn. Divorce is the death of a relationship. It affects every aspect of your life, and sometimes it even means leaving your home. It is not something you quickly get over, so please take care of yourself. There is importance and healing within self care after divorce.

Tips for Self Care After Divorce

Makeup

You may decide that you could care less about your looks right after a divorce. You may not be getting enough sleep or eating correctly and this can show on your face. Even if you can’t manage to pull yourself completely out of this slump yet, putting on just a touch of makeup can lift your spirits and stop you from being hypercritical of yourself.

Start with something easy like a great fiber mascara and maybe a bit of lipstick. Just these small changes will make you look awake and pretty.

Skincare

It might be time to overhaul your skincare routine. If you have just been in the habit of washing your face with soap and slapping on some sunscreen, you can definitely do better. Investigate what natural skincare companies have to offer now. A great face wash, serum, and eye cream can take years off your face.

Journaling for Self Care

Consider going to a nice bookstore and picking out a beautiful journal for your self care. You can tell the journal exactly how you’re feeling. You can tell it things you wouldn’t even tell your best friend or your mother. Journaling is a great way to get out your emotions. The journal will also be a valuable thing to look back on. When some time has passed and you are feeling better, it will show you how far you have come.

Therapy

If you feel you are not improving on your own, please consider seeing a therapist for your self care. Family therapists are very knowledgeable about the feelings that divorce causes and may be the boost you need to get over the worst part.

Most insurance companies cover several mental health visits, so don’t worry about the expense.

Clothing

Take a good look in your closet. Do you hate most of the items in there? Maybe many of them remind you of your marriage and special occasions the two of you shared. Maybe it’s time to donate your clothes to charity (it’s also a tax deduction) and start a new wardrobe. Have you dressed to please yourself or did you always wear clothes that your husband liked? Now you can find clothes that you feel comfortable in and that really fit your personality.

Hair

If you wore your hair a certain way because your husband preferred it, now you can find a style to call your own without having to consult anyone for your own self care. Have you always wanted to be a blonde or get a pixie cut? You can do it now; you have no one’s opinion to ask but your own.

Luxury for Self Care

Think about the things that really make you feel good, but that you could never do before. Maybe taking a long, uninterrupted bath is the way you like to relax. You can do that now; no one will knock on the door and tell you to hurry up. Maybe candles relax you, but your husband always complained. Go and pick out some beautifully scented candles and burn them all you want. If you’ve always wanted a pink kitchen, go and buy the paint now. . If you love to blast music while you work around the house, go ahead. Your husband isn’t there to tell you to keep it down. If he was always allergic to flowers, go to a florist and buy several amazing arrangements for every room of the house. In the spring, plant rose and lilac bushes to your heart’s content.

Hobbies

It sounds cliche, but taking up a new hobby can be very comforting. Think about what you’ve always wanted to be able to do. Visit a store that sells those supplies and delve into it. Expensive classes aren’t really necessary anymore. YouTube has tutorials on anything you might want to learn from knitting to woodworking. Spending time on a hobby will prevent you from feeling sorry for yourself.

Drinking

There is nothing wrong with an occasional beer or glass of wine, but be careful not to get yourself started on a bad habit. Try not to drink alone. If you feel like opening a bottle of wine, invite a friend over so that you don’t sit alone and drink the whole thing.

Please be kind to yourself right now and spend this time on self-indulgence and self-improvement. Soon you’ll be ready to be a full participant in whatever the next chapter of your life holds.
